Miag-ao Church

One of the Oldest Churches
in the Philippines

Built between 1787 and 1797, the Miag-ao Church, officially the Santo Tomas de Villanueva Parish Church, is a historic fortress church in Iloilo. Its massive walls and distinctive design reflect the period when churches also served as places of refuge for the community. The richly carved façade blends European Baroque architecture with Filipino artistic traditions, featuring local plant motifs, including the coconut tree, alongside religious imagery. In 1993, Miag-ao Church was inscribed by UNESCO as one of the four Baroque Churches of the Philippines. Today, it remains an active place of worship and an enduring landmark of Miag-ao’s history, faith, craftsmanship, and local identity.
